JJ Johse is one of the best editors I’ve worked with. Her fine eye for detail and creative knack for seeing what’s missing have helped me immeasurably. It’s thanks to her that I have found a home for Canoples Investigations Tackles Space Pirates, and hope to soon do the same with Paradox Lost, and Wrong One.
Twelve-year-old Linh Roberts has an exciting and adventurous life with her undercover-cop dad. Together they solve mysteries, investigate strange phenomenon, and help those in need. But her adventurous life suddenly screeches to a halt when her dad is murdered. She moves in with her aunt and uncle, and after several months decides to continue down the sleuthing path her father put her on. Her first investigation of a house rumored to have disembodied voices within, proves to be exciting but also intimidating and downright petrifying when she is abruptly tossed through time and ends up in the middle of Hitler’s aggression-inflicted Denmark. She is quickly branded a Jew and must battle her way out before she is exterminated with her new Jewish friends. Her conflicts are many while she hides under docks, in boats, in the forest, and tries to make it to the safety of neutral Sweden, as well as finding a way back to her real home without changing or damaging the course of history.
Linh Roberts leaves her first completed mission, but much to her chagrin, doesn’t get to go home. Instead she is thrown into another era with a new task, this one of child slavery and spinning factories in South Carolina. Posing as an orphan, this twelve-year-old goes to work at the spinner and gains the trust of several new friends, ages five to fourteen, already employed. Linh takes on dangerous machinery, discrimination, a mob of angry and disillusioned parents, and an incompetent sheriff. Her smarts and stamina meet these battles head on while sneaking in and out of town to put together a permanent consequence for the factory bosses who have no regard for human rights or safety.
Canoples Investigations. BD Bradford resides on Canoples Station in 2364. He’s on his last break before graduating high school. The biggest worry on his mind is scoring enough creds to buy the latest vid-game, and making up with his girlfriend, if she’ll stop glaring at him. An announcement at breakfast hatches an idea in his ever-active brain – space pirates might be in the vicinity. Visions of creds tumbling around him after he captures the miscreants war with thoughts of what he did to torque off his girlfriend. He catches a glimpse of the villains outside the promenade’s viewpoint, but he beats feet to safety upon hearing one of his sworn enemies having a drama moment.
